Designer with an engineer's brain 🌷

I'm Hsu Yee Mon — everyone calls me Mavis. I came to UX through a Computer Systems Engineering degree (1st Class Honours, University of Sunderland), which means I prototype in Figma and understand what developers need to ship it. I speak English, Chinese, and Burmese, and I design for people across all three worlds.

My Full Story

Illustrated avatar of Mavis

"My path here wasn't a straight line. I started medical school in 2019, drawn to the idea of helping people — but in 2022, I made the leap into information technology, chasing a different kind of problem-solving. That decision led me to a degree in Computer Systems Engineering, where I learned to think like an engineer: structured, logical, and obsessed with how things actually work under the hood.

Somewhere along the way, I realized the part I loved most wasn't just building systems — it was designing them around people. That's what pulled me fully into UX design, where I get to combine the empathy from my medical school days with the technical grounding from engineering.

Alongside design work, I teach Chinese language and ICT to young learners at an international school — a role that keeps me sharp at breaking down complex ideas into something simple and clear, a skill that shows up in every design I make."

Character Introduction

A fast-learning, full-cycle UX designer — research to prototype to polish, picking up new skills as quickly as new projects

My Teaching Journey

Mavis with colleagues at SKT International School

Teaching Chinese Language and being a ICT lecturer at SKT International School has shaped how I design just as much as my engineering background has.

Breaking down a grammar rule for a 10-year-old isn't so different from simplifying a checkout flow for a frustrated user, both demand patience, clarity, and a lot of empathy for where the other person is starting from.

It's a part of my life I didn't expect to influence my design work, but it does, every day.

Fun Fact:

  • Former medical school student turned UX designer
  • Speaks 3 languages fluently
  • Teaches Chinese & ICT to young learners
  • Learns new tools fast — usually within a weekend
  • Believes good design should feel invisible
